Personal growth is innately “uncomfortable”, since you are attempting to do things you’ve never done before. To reach your best version of yourself, you should work hard and face tricky challenges along the way. But it’s worthwhile!
But let’s start from an important distinction: GROWTH MNDSET VS FIXED MINDSET. What is this?
People with a growth mindset think of life as a learning process, in which they can improve their abilities. They believe their skills are not fixed, so they seek out new things to learn and thus grow as individuals. They say things like “If at first I don’t succeed, I try again”.
Yet, people with a fixed mindset believe they are stuck with whatever abilities they already have, and no amount of practice will change this. They say things like “If at first I don’t succeed, it’s not the right thing for me”.
Now, I want to suggest you practical ways to start this journey (if you haven’t started yet, despite all my articles!😊)
1️⃣ LISTEN TO YOURSELF
You should start listening to your interior monologue very closely:
- What kinds of things do you say about yourself in your head?
- What’s your self-consideration?
- Do you criticise yourself for never doing things well enough, or when you make a mistake?
If you bombard yourself with negative messages all day, it’ll be hard to stay motivated and feel safe enough to take risks (no matter how big or small)
2️⃣ BEGIN THE WORK OF CHANGE
After listening to yourself, understand what to do to start your change. Remember the growth mindset and give yourself the possibility to learn new things: enroll in new courses, read books about different topics, listen to motivational or psychological podcasts, do bachata lessons…basically, get out of your comfort zone. In this regard, let’s make another distinction.
3️⃣ COMFORT ZONE, STRETCH ZONE AND STRESS ZONE
▶ The comfort zone refers to actions you are the most comfortable taking. Here, both the level of stress and mental stimulation are low.
▶ In the stretch zone, things are a little less comfortable as you feel increasingly challenged. Stress levels are still manageable, however, and actually keep you sharp and focused. As a result, you learn and grow as an individual.
▶ In the stress zone, your challenges constantly overwhelm you and can’t do your best since you’re simply too stressed. Because you are in survival mode, you don’t learn and soon get exhausted.
So, which zone do you think is the right one if you want to keep growing as an individual? (You have 10 sec) you guessed it: the stretch zone! You should try to figure out where YOUR stretch zone lies and then get in as often as possible. But how do you do this?
Schedule your priorities according to YOUR own needs: if getting in shape is a priority for you, adhere to a workout schedule. Ideally, get a friend to join you, so that this positive competitiveness will keep you motivated and you’ll avoid putting off your training sessions! You are getting out of your comfort zone without getting overly stressed with unachievable goals!
5️⃣ SURROUND YOURSELF WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE
The people around you will have a big influence on your success: they can either lift you up and support you or drag you down with their apathy and unhelpful criticism. Seek out people who have more experience to guide and support you or who are doing what you’d like to do (mentors or teachers). You have many options. Pick up the right one for you!
I’ve given you a few elements (hope you’ve found them helpful) to put into practice in your everyday life. Results guaranteed😊!
